Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter born to Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. She was only a young child when her father, who was the carnival barker, passed away. Her mother had to work in jobs such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth was raised in a poor neighborhood of Boston Massachusetts where she attended high school. Her school was closed in two years in order to study acting. This was not an easy path to take. Even though she got a job as a hat check girl in New York posing as a woman for a magazine but no theater jobs were offered to her. Then, after a stint as a club hat girl, she decided to return to her home in Massachusetts and leave her position. There she was able to earn a living in the ushering industry during the during the day and then at night performed with the New England Repertory Company. It was her first job as an actor. She also studied drama and eventually graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
